Cheap Jesus

I have recently discovered that some missionaries in Muslim nations use a different translation of the Bible with the purpose of being ‘Muslim-friendly.’ Muslims disagree with Christians about the identity and nature of Jesus not just because they don’t believe that Jesus is the Messiah, Son of God, but because the Qur’an says that ‘God’ curses anyone who would utter the ridiculous blasphemy that Jesus is or could be ‘a Son of God.’

So in order to be Muslim-friendly, some missionaries use a ‘tweaked’ translation of the Bible that changes from Son of God to “the beloved son who comes from God.” Since God is Creator, saying that Jesus is a beloved son who comes from God is not so threatening. It simply plays around with the idea of Jesus’ divine sonship but doesn’t really affirm it.

Missionaries share the message of the Bible and Muslims actually warm up to the Gospel and begin to read the bible and hold services in their homes.

I don’t know about you, but this bothers me A LOT!

Yes, it’s important to reach out to Muslims who have a complete misunderstanding of who Jesus Christ is, but I refuse to deny a TRUTH in order to ACCOMMODATE the ears of those who follow other religions. If they are to have faith in Jesus as their Savior and live a life as followers of this Savior, they NEED TO KNOW WHO HE REALLY IS. Otherwise we simply lead them to another sphere of the same darkness that they’ve already been in.

I am certain that tweaking His identity was not the expectation that Jesus had when He commissioned His followers to “make disciples of all nations.”

Here we are, trying to take matters into our own hands again.
Muslims aren’t the only religious people who do not accept the truth that Jesus Christ, the man who walked on this Earth, was God’s Son. But here we are, we see a truth that is not accepted by others and we try to accommodate this truth in order to get the job done OUR WAY. God doesn’t want us to CHANGE THE MESSAGE, God wants us to PROCLAIM IT. The rest is up to Him. The gospel message doesn’t need tweaking, the message hasn’t changed, why will we change it now? So we can feel good about ourselves in saying that we got Muslims to read the Bible and warm up to Christianity; one that doesn’t reveal the WHOLE TRUTH about JESUS? Come on now! Don’t offer them a cheaper version of Jesus, just so we can think that they’ve made a step closer toward heaven. (don’t get me started!)

I understand the pain that fill our hearts (especially the missionaries in the field) to know that many don’t acknowledge Jesus as Savior and Lord. But I urge you, do not compromise the message. Let us evangelize both by words and actions but let us be faithful to the truth that set us free!

Muslims and others may have to unlearn what they’ve been taught to believe in order to come to know the saving power of the Lord Jesus Christ, the Messiah, the SON OF GOD.And may the same Spirit who inspired the text touch the souls of those who are presented the truth of the Gospel through you and through me.

Jesus is the Son of God!
Mark 1:9-11 – 9 At that time Jesus came from Nazareth in Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan. 10 Just as Jesus was coming up out of the water, he saw heaven being torn open and the Spirit descending on him like a dove. 11 And a voice came from heaven saying, “You are my Son, whom I love; with you I am well pleased.”
